Present Employment:

Sandia National Laboratories
Div. 1822

Present Occupation: Member of Technical Staff, Materials Scientist - Electron Microprobe

Work History and Responsibilities at Sandia:

I began working at Sandia National Laboratories in October 1974. To date, I have been there over 28 years. Originally hired in as a Technical Staff Associate to work under Bill Chambers in the electron microprobe laboratory,

I was promoted in December 1980 to Member of Technical Staff and placed in charge of the probe lab.

I am in charge of the electron microprobe laboratory, part of the centralized analytical support facilities for the 7000+ people at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In that respect, I am responsible for all functions of the lab including supervision of one Science Assistant Technical. My specific duties involve caring for and maintaining two Cameca MBX electron microprobes, arranging for the visits of repairmen, when needed, the ordering of all necessary parts and supplies and new equipment, and assisting in the evaluation, purchasing, and checkout of new instruments, such as the JEOL 8600 which we are in the process of buying.

The major part of my job is the scheduling and operation of the instruments in performing requested analyses. This involves reviewing requests for analyses from staff to determine if electron microprobe analysis is the appropriate technique to answer the needs of the client and, if so, how to perform the analyses to best meet the needs of our requestors. I assign priority levels to each job request inhouse to best accommodate the wishes and needs of all involved. When the job comes up, I will either perform the analyses myself or assign it to my assistant, whom I will oversee during the completion of the analyses. Then I will orally report the results (or review and oversee the report of my assistant) to the appropriate staff and any materials consultants I deem to be necessary. All jobs require short written reports but some also require memos, internal reports, Sandia publications, or external publications and/or presentations.

In addition to this service work which I perform for, and sometimes in collaboration with, the engineers, metallurgists, ceramists, geologists, etc., I also do some personal research on microprobe techniques and corrections (usually in collaboration with Chambers, Romig, or others), geology, and mineralogy. As a result of my collaborative research with the materials scientists at Sandia and inhouse training in various fields of materials science, I have become knowledgeable about, if not expert, not only in electron microprobe analyses, geology, and mineralogy, but also in metallurgy, ceramics, nuclear waste forms, thermal batteries, superconductors, welds, brazes, solders, glass - to - metal seals, metallization of ceramics, etc. My bibliography includes over 39 external publications, 8 internal publications, and 52 presentations on a wide variety of technical topics. In addition to my duties as an expert on microprobe analysis, I act as a consultant on geology and mineralogy for the staff of my directorate. Finally, I have taught and/or proctored courses at Sandia on SEM analysis, electron microprobe analysis, beginning geology, and introductory mineralogy.

Previous Professional Experience:

University of New Mexico, Research Assistant in Microprobe Laboratory from September, 1971 to September, (Worked under Dr. Klaus Keil and Dr. Martin Prinz on Lunar samples, ultramafic rocks, Hawaiian basalts, and inclusions in diamonds.)

Frontier Resources, Denver, Colorado, working as a field assistant looking for economic, sedimentary Copper ore deposits in New Mexico, Summer of 1971.

University of New Mexico, Teaching Assistant for Physical Geology labs from February, 1971 to June, 1971.

University of Wisconsin - River Falls (then called Wisconsin State University - River Falls), Instructor Of Geology and Earth Science in the department of Plant and Earth Science. (Taught Physical Geology and Labs, Historical Geology and Labs, Mineralogy, Petrology, Economic Geology, and Guided senior thesis research.)

University of Wisconsin - Madison, Teaching Assistant for Physical Geology labs and discussion classes and part-time Research Assistant doing optical petrography of metamorphic rocks.

Outside Activities:

Northwestern New Mexico Regional Science Fair, Category Chairman in charge of the judges for Earth
Science and Space Science for the past four years, before that, Earth Science judge for several years.

Albuquerque Gem and Mineral Club, I have served as President, Vice President in charge of programs, Vice President in charge of field trips, Board member, etc. At the present time, I write a column called "Trivial Pursuits" for the club newsletter, the "News Nuggets". An article written for the October 1987 issue, entitled "The Mystery of the Magnetic Dinosaur Bones", won first place at the Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies competition and third at the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies competition.

Microprobing New Minerals, I have been active in researching minerals on my own time. Because of my interests in this field, I have one new species to print, two accepted and in preparation for publication, and several more in progress. In addition, I have been responsible for the first reports of well over a dozen species in New Mexico.

Mineral Identification Activity

For over twenty-two years, I have provided microprobe analysis of New Mexico minerals. This has been accomplished with the authorization of Sandia National Laboratories. During this period, I have been instrumental in establishing the identity of dozens of mineral species previously unknown to specific mines, mining districts or to the state of New Mexico.

The following is a partial listing of mineral species that I have had primary responsibility in establishing identity using microprobe analysis in conjunction with other identification methods. 73 minerals are listed below. This is only the work done for Ramon S. DeMark and does not include work done for the rest of the mineral community.
